My name is James K McLaurin and I'm the webmaster of this family website. I promised to try and reproduce as best I can this unforgettable May 14th and 15th 90th birthday celebration for one of our own, Dora Mae McLaurin. For those of you that attended, it's a
a memory rekindled for your enjoyment again. For those of you who missed it, we can't bring those two days back, but you will certainly get to enjoy a tremendous out pour of love for this remarkable woman of ours. Everybody sit back, relax and enjoy!
It was a "SURPRISE BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION" in which a committee of four people, Mr. Bruce G. McLaurin, Mr. James K. McLaurin, Ms. Shamara Baldwin, and Mrs. Yvonne Powell-Adimola started planning back in December of 2020. Those of you that really know this lady, it's extremely difficult to keep something from her. Anyway after months and months of planning, we pulled it off. All of the events took place in New York.
May 14, 2021, was a Friday and her birthday. Off she went with her family in tow from Cleveland, Ohio to New York City to visit the One World Trade Center. There she would meet up with her niece Rekeesha Sealy and her two daughters that flew in from Miami, Florida to spend the day with her in the city. Below are some pictures taken during One World Trade Center Tour.
Group sat down at the "Le District" restaurant in Battery Park a few blocks from the trade center. Rekeesha Sealy and duaghters, Bambi, Greg, Gwen, and Gregg taking video of the Jersey side.
Bambi's got the braids going on!.
Mushrooms were in that conversation
The second item on her bucket list for her trip to New York for her 90th birthday was to go out on the Long Island Sound and fish for Porgies. Fishing has always been one of her favorite things to do, and all of her siblings loved it too. Of course she has numerous fishing stories which revolve around her brother's Moses and Wilbur. Believe you me, they are very funny stories.
On Saturday May 15, 2021 a fishing trip was set up for her by her nephew Mr. James Greene (Spider). Fishing also happens to be one of his favorite past times, so he was very happy to set this up for Bambi. This fishing trip would be an all day affair leaving out of Port Jefferson at around 7:00 am and returning to the pier around 4:00 pm. Of course the weather would be a major player for this event and the weather held out beautifully. If inclement weather would have appeared, a back up plan included taking Bambi to another one of her fun places and that would be the casino. Long Island now has Jake's 58 Casino in Suffolk county in Islandia. Weather was great and the party boat departed for a fun day of fishing on the Long Island Sound.
Bambi had a good day on the water. The Porgies were biting and she was able to pull up a few. She said that she really enjoyed her time out on the water with her nephews Spider and Kevin Greene, and the others on the boat. Below are some pics.
P.S. The red hoody outfit was given to her by her niece Sharon McLaurin.
